Weedkiller train

The LLLR is located in a wood in the south of England and every year the vegetation tries to take over the railway. For several years this was controlled - more or less - with weed killer sprayed from backpack sprayers but in 2015 we decided to adapt an open bogie wagon as the basis for a 'Vegetation Control Train' as the big boys call it.

A 40l spray tank, often used on orchard tractors or ATVs comes with a 12V dc pump and with the help of some plastic tubing and spray nossles, we soon had a working spray wagon.

Into the tank goes 20l or so of water, 280ml of Glyphosate (aka 'Roundup') and 10g of 'Paradise' [Flazasulfuron] or similar. Roundup starts to show it's effects in a week or so and whist 'Paradise' takes longer, it is also a germination inhibitor, so one does early in the season lasts all year. Note these are very toxic chemicals and for industrial use with trained staff and suitable protective clothing.

This allows two full circuits of the main loop and has proven to be very effective. After use, wash everything down on a hardstanding and make sure there is no run off into waterways.
